One of the Saddest Days in Our Country

So today was the day the US Congress counts the electoral votes and officially approves Joe Biden's win in the US Presidential Election. Normally a routine act on the way to the official inauguration of the new President on the 20th. Except that Trump had been ranting about how he had won and that the election was stolen from him. In retrospect, he telegraphed this move from a year ago. That the only legitimate election would be one that he won. Built his narratives along the way just so he had some story to fall back on. Mail-in votes were not to be trusted he said. The economy was going way too strong for him not to be re-elected was the thought. Until the pandemic hit. And then for me, I didn't see how anyone could vote for him. And that those who would, had simply lost all reason. Well, those that did vote for him did lose all reason. Because they bought in to the narrative that the election was stolen. Of course, it's easy to buy it when Trump trumpets that narrative from every available media appearance. That IS his genius actually. He knows how to manipulate the media. He's the perfect reality show. And even when he acts above the law, you realize that his most fervent supporters want exactly that. To be like him. To be rich and above the law. To say what they want in however way they want. Well all that took a horrible turn today. His supporters finally went too far. And marched on to the US Capitol where Congress was in session at his urging. And the people forced their way in, some of them armed, some of them saying that they were coming for VP Pence and that they were going to hang him for being a traitor. What happened today was an invasion from within. And it was the most low-intelligence low-information coalition of the conservatives that showed up and somehow thought they could change the outcome of the election by forcing Congress to just forget about the election and somehow do whatever they needed to in order to make sure it was Trump that was certified the winner of the election. This kind of stuff happens in 3rd world countries and dictatorships. It does not happen in the USA, the bastion of democracy. Until today. Trump's legacy? Gone. Forever will we remember today. The Republican Party? we'll see. It was a sad day in America. But at the end of the day. Joe Biden still got certified as the next President of the United States.
